Trip Overview

Discover Untamed Trails and Hidden Histories in Gorilla Trek

If you’re seeking a trekking experience that goes beyond the usual Himalayan routes, the Gorilla Trek  offers something truly rare a journey through untouched landscapes, culturally rich villages, and the legacy of Nepal’s past conflicts. This is not your typical mountain trek it’s a powerful blend of nature, history, and raw adventure.

Unlike the popular Everest or Annapurna circuits, the Gorilla Trek takes you deep into Nepal’s mid-western hills, weaving through regions once shaped by the Maoist revolution. The trek’s name originates from the “guerrilla” warfare tactics used during the civil conflict, offering not just a walk through nature, but a walk through history.

Highlight: Takam Village – Where History and Mountains Meet

Among the most captivating stops on the trek is Takam Village, nestled in the Myagdi district. Once a strategic hub during the conflict, Takam is now a peaceful settlement rich in both heritage and natural beauty. Here, you can still see ancient war trenches, a haunting reminder of its past, while soaking in the present-day serenity of the Himalayas.

But Takam isn’t just about history—it’s also a cultural crossroads. Home to a vibrant mix of ethnic groups including Magar, Gurung, Chhetri, Brahman, Kami, Damai, Sarki, Thakali, and Chantal, the village offers a living mosaic of Nepal’s diverse traditions. The hospitality is warm, the stories are real, and the mountain views especially of Mt. Dhaulagiri and Mukut Himal are unforgettable.

Takam also serves as a gateway to further adventures, including treks to the Dhaulagiri Base Camp and Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve, adding even more depth to your journey.

Trip Itinerary

Your adventure begins with a scenic road trip from Kathmandu to Beni, a charming town nestled at the foothills of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The 10-12 hour drive winds through lush valleys, cascading rivers, and terraced farmland. Overnight at a local guesthouse in Beni.

The trek officially kicks off with a gradual climb through vibrant terraced fields and forest trails. Along the way, you'll pass small hillside settlements and possibly spot monkeys, barking deer, and exotic birdlife. Arrive at Takam, a historically rich village offering sweeping views of the Dhaulagiri range.

Hike through dense woodlands filled with blooming rhododendrons, towering oaks, and ancient junipers. The elevation gain rewards you with crisp air and panoramic mountain views. Lamsung, perched high on the ridge, provides a peaceful retreat with front-row seats to the snow-capped Himalayas.

Today’s trail climbs steadily into subalpine terrain. The landscape transforms into alpine pastures and mossy forests of hemlock and fir. Keep an eye out for blue sheep and Himalayan tahrs grazing along the ridgelines.  Spend the night under a starlit sky at Gujarghat.

Enter the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve, Nepal’s only official hunting zone, known for its rich biodiversity. You might glimpse rare wildlife like Himalayan black bears, musk deer, and even signs of the elusive snow leopard. Dhorpatan is a blend of alpine meadows, remote settlements, and wild nature.

Hike across rolling hills and gentle ridges with sweeping views of the surrounding peaks. The route is known for its peaceful ambiance and opportunities to see Danphe (Himalayan monals), Nepal’s nationalbird. Niseldhor offers a quiet and culturally rich atmosphere for the night.

Descend through dense pine forests and rhododendron-covered hillsides. You’ll likely come across yak herders and local shepherds grazing their flocks on the open slopes. Tallo Sera is a tranquil hamlet surrounded by vibrant greenery and mountain ridges.

Follow the path downhill alongside the serene Rajhi River, passing small hamlets, rice paddies, and bamboo groves. This subtropical zone is a haven for birdwatchers—look for eagles, vultures, and kingfishers as you trek.

Ascend gently through thick forest to reach Thabang, a culturally significant village and a former Maoist stronghold. Today, it thrives as a peaceful, progressive community. Engage with locals to learn about their history, art, and way of life, deeply rooted in resistance and resilience.
